Skype Helps Father Check In On Son's Progress

PLUM BORO (KDKA) ― An elementary school in Plum Borough added something new to its parent-teacher conference.

A father stationed thousands of miles away in Iraq was able to check in on his son's progress through the Internet.

Master Sergeant General Wilson Frantz spoke to his son's teacher and his wife with Skype. Kim Frantz and her husband have five children.

Although her husband is stationed in the Middle East, she says it's important he take part in their academic lives.

Today it was six-year-old Owen's turn.

"It went very well," Kim Frantz said. "It was my idea because I thought it would keep him connected to Owen and his progress at school."

"To hear his voice and hear his excitement about his child's progress – that was rewarding within itself so I was pleased with the entire thing," Heather Kerrigan, Owen's teacher, said.

Martha Freese, principal at Regency Park Elementary, said the school was happy to make the conference possible.

"Our view at Plum is a conference is a conference and the technology today was just another way to make the conference happen," she said.
