Independent Firm Recommends City School Closures

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Pittsburgh Public Schools District could be closing more schools in the future.

A recommendation from an independent consulting firm includes closing 16 school buildings and nine schools.

According to the report, the district's population is expected to fall nearly 16 percent in the next decade.

"It's just a great school. The parents all know each other, the PTO is stable – I mean you work your way up from kindergarten until your child graduates and the teachers are just wonderful – they care," Arlena Seng, a Woolslair parent, said.

Superintendent Mark Roosevelt says the recommendation is only one part of a long process and the school board will make its own evaluations.

"We'll be taking their report and their recommendations and looking at it from various other perspectives, including our academic objectives and very calmly coming up with a plan," he said. "This is not like four years ago. We're not in a dramatic budget deficit, we're not in a crisis at all."

Roosevelt says it will likely be several months before he recommends any school closures.
