Pittsburgh Promise Gets First Report Card

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Pittsburgh Promise pledges college scholarships to graduates of Pittsburgh Public Schools who have good enough grades to qualify.

Today, the first report card for the program was released and it was a good one.

Officials say the program raised $15 million, which means it will get the first full matching grant of $10 million from UPMC.

It is also hoped that in the long term an impressive goal can be met.

"By the year 2012, the decline in the population of our city and the decline in the enrollment of our district will come to a stop," said the program's Saleem Ghubril.

The students say they are seeing the positive results too.

"Without the Pittsburgh Promise, I probably would have went to a community college, not IUP. But after I heard of the Pittsburgh Promise, I actually tried to get my grades up," added current Indiana University of Pennsylvania student, Sarmed Shareef.
