Catholic Schools Week: Chimbote Foundation
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
An important part of Catholic Schools Week for many students around our area included raising funds for the Chimbote Mission located in Peru.
According to the Diocese of Pittsburgh, Chimbote is a desert town located about 250 miles north of Lima. And it is home to about 350,000 people who live in poverty.
The Chimbote Foundation was started more than 30 year ago by Monsignor H. Jules Roos, Diocese officials say.
They say the Social Works Center in Chimbote, initially opened as a clinic and home for the elderly, remains an important part of the Mission. Also, over the years the Center has grown to include a maternity hospital and the San Martin Laboratory, which also helps the local people with medical care.
Meanwhile, here in Pittsburgh and the surrounding area, many Catholic Schools in our area say they do work for the Mission through the year and not just during the celebration of Catholic Schools Week.
But this year, students and staff raised money as well as awareness for those needy people living in Chimbote with Dress Down Days, fundraiser bingos and guest speakers.
The fundraising will continue and for more information on the Chimbote Mission visit:
