Penn Hills Teachers Ready To Strike
PENN HILLS (KDKA) ―
It will be a short school week for about 5,000 students in the Penn Hills School District.
Classes have been canceled Thursday and Friday after the union representing more than 400 teachers gave notice of their intent to strike.
It will be the first strike in the district in more than 15 years.
Students at Lincoln Middle School's family fun night said they were happy about the strike, but parents had a different point of view.
Bob Murra, a parent, said he felt seniors would be hurt the most.
The district said in a statement that the teachers trimmed their salary requests from 15 percent to 6 percent a year after it became public.
The district also said the salary being sought by teachers would raise taxes.
"Don't believe everything you read by the board," Union spokesman Butch Santicola told KDKA-TV. "It's designed to misdirect and miscommunicate and put pressure on the teachers."
The Penn Hills School board is scheduled to meet Tuesday night.
