Pittsburgh Police Crackdown In School Safety Zones

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― It is National School Bus Safety Week, but today police from across the area were concerned with what was going on outside the bus.

While most people were on their way to work, city police were cracking down on school zone safety.

KDKA's Traffic and Transportation reporter Jim Lokay rode along as city police timed and tagged violators around town.

The top culprits were speeders.

"I click when the front wheels hit the first line, the second time when they hit the second line, and it displays the speed and the number of seconds that it took on the citation," said Pittsburgh Police Officer Mike McNamara.

As for the fine, speeding starts at $35. An extra $2 is added for each mile past five miles an hour over plus other costs.

Passing a bus with the flashing red lights is costly. That's a $250 fine, with costs $334.50, plus five points on your license, plus an automatic 60-day suspension.

After a two hour drive with about a dozen stops, Officer Ray Kain said school zone scofflaws have become all too common.

"You're in charge of a 1,500 pound guided missile," said Kain. "You think you might want to pay attention in a school zone."

And while local students have stayed safe, for the most part, there's always the risk hence crackdowns like today's.
