Schools Follow Health Department's Lead On H1N1

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― When it comes to kids, schools and H1N1, the rules are all new.

In the Mt. Lebanon School District, the latest information is posted on the district's Website. It tells parents what schools have confirmed cases of H1N1 and when they were diagnosed.

Penn Hills is using its Website for updated information as well. Parents were alerted when the first cases were diagnosed, but they are not providing detailed information on other cases on a regular basis.

Parents of students in Pittsburgh Public Schools will be receiving a letter sometime this week that gives basic information about H1N1, describing flu symptoms and when to seek medical care.

"If a teacher is observing a child that has come to school for two days feeling very lethargic, looking very sweaty or feverish, complains of flu-like symptoms – get that child to the health office and let's get that child home and checked out so that we're not possibly exposing other children and that teacher to illness," Janet Yuhasz, from the district, said.

Pittsburgh Public Schools, along with other districts, say they are monitoring absentee rates every day and using health department guidelines to determine when or if a school should shut down because of H1N1.

"If the student population or staff teaching population reaches a 30 to 40 percent range of the entire enrollment in a specific school – that's a hefty warning sign," Yuhasz said.

Pittsburgh public schools are meeting with the health department about possibly setting up sites to distribute the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available.

Parents will be notified with information from the meeting.
