Duquesne Teachers, Students Head Back To Class

DUQUESNE (KDKA) ― Class will be back in session today in the Duquesne City School District now that the administration and striking teachers have reached a tentative agreement.

The teachers hit the picket lines on Tuesday, and both sides sat down with a state-appointed mediator on Thursday afternoon. After about two hours of negotiations, the two sides managed to reach an agreement.

The details of the contract have not yet been released.

It will have to be ratified at the next State Board of Control meeting on Sept. 23.

Teachers said they were looking for a 19 percent pay increase, which they say would have brought them up to the same level as teachers in the second lowest paid group of teachers in Allegheny County.

But the district says they were only capable of a three percent raise.

A union spokesperson says the teachers didn't get exactly what they wanted, but adds that they were more interested in getting the students back to class.

Stay with KDKA for the latest details.
