Duquesne Teachers Meet On Eve Of Strike

DUQUESNE (KDKA) ― Teachers in the Duquesne City School District met at a small church, mapping out final strike plans Monday night.

Several were greeted by students, who hugged, and chatted with them as they went inside the church, just across the street from the Duquesne Elementary School.

About 50 teachers plan to strike on Tuesday. Their union says they are the lowest paid teachers in Allegheny County. The union wants a 19 percent pay raise, the district is only offering a 3 percent raise.

Butch Sanitcola, of the Pennsylvania State Teachers Association, said before the meeting that there was a lot of concern on the part of rank and file teachers, as to what was going to happen to them, but, they felt they had no choice, but to strike.

Asked if he thought it would be a long strike, Santicola said: "A lot depends on what happens the first couple of days, if the strike is not settled within 72 hours or so, then there's going to be difficulty."

The state took over the troubled district eight years ago. In 2007, Duquesne High School was closed, and students were re-assigned to either West Mifflin or East Allegheny.
