Duquesne Teachers Ready To Strike

Parents can stay updated on the situation by calling 412.394.5505.

DUQUESNE (KDKA) ― Only a few days after the start of the school year, teachers in the Duquesne School District have announced they will go on strike.

They'll hit the picket line starting Tuesday.

Butch Santicola, from the teachers union, says the issue is about money. He says teachers in the district are the lowest-paid in the county.

The district was declared financially distressed eight years ago. The Allegheny Intermediate Unit is managing the district this year.

The district's troubled high school was closed last year and those students were sent to two other high schools. Therefore, this strike only affects students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

The school district will be closed to students and all extra-curricular activities have been cancelled. Parents can stay updated on the situation by calling 412.394.5505.

Stay with KDKA for the latest details.
