Duquesne Teachers Striking Over Wages

DUQUESNE (KDKA) ― With the school year just beginning, teachers in the Duquesne School District will walk the picket lines.

The teachers are striking because of wages. Butch Santicola, from the Pennsylvania State Education Association, says they are the lowest-paid teachers in Allegheny County.

The teachers union is asking for a 19 percent salary increase. The district is offering 3 percent.

"I know the difference is big - there's a lot of hurdles to overcome," said Santicola. "This is a district that's run by the state - we've had to endure five different sets of administration in eight years."

He adds that the changing curriculum, low test scores, and a distressed community, plus teachers who have accepted lower pay or pay freezes trying to keep the district solvent are all part of a complex problem.

"The funding from the state is critical for this situation," Santicola said. "The state has to recognize there are inequities in Duquesne."

The strike will affect about 550 students in grades K-8. Not affected are Duquesne high school students who will continue classes at West Mifflin and East Allegheny where they were assigned earlier this year.

No new negotiations are scheduled and all extracurricular activities have been cancelled along with school.
