Catholic Schools Week: Student Essays
(KDKA)
As part of the Catholic Schools Week celebration, many local students wrote down their thoughts in essays. KDKA.com is featuring excerpts from several of the best student essays from across the area.
St. Raphael Elementary School:
Veronica: "The teachers work hard to ensure that you have a terrific future ahead of you, in both education and in the more important things in life. My grandmother still is very close to the friends she made at St. Raphael School 69 years ago, and I'm confident that it will be the same for me."
Leah: "Being in a Catholic school lets me celebrate my religion every day. We respect one another and accept each other's differences. We have many different interests, but we all seem to have the same morals and values."
Elizabeth Seton Regional School:
Fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Cynthia Di Bello, says during Catholic Schools Week she asked her students to list all the different kinds of lights they could think of and they came up with 36 different types from candle light to laser lights. Then, they were asked how Catholic Schools are like any of these lights:
Catholic School is a light because: Darian: "God is like a street light; always watching over you."
Corinne: "Like runway lights, they show you the way to God."
Tadasia: "Like a search light, it helps you find people who help you."
Taylor: "It leads you to your future like a lighthouse leads you to the shore in a storm."
Rodger: "Like spot lights, our school lights the way for safety."
Morgann: "Like candles are your Guardian Angel."
St. Agnes School:
Students were asked to write about, 'What St. Agnes School Means To Them.'
Jessica (Grade 6): "This is my 6th year in St. Agnes School, and every day I learn more and more about friendship, hardship, and even tragedy. St. Agnes School is an amazing school filled with amazing people. However, I always know that the most important thing St. Agnes School teaches me is to love God. We are taught that we are called to follow in God's footsteps, and to love and care for one another. Everyday we get further and further into our lives and, as we get older, we realize that we assume more responsibility in our lives and in our faith. This school taught me to open my eyes to the Lord. He is my inspiration, and I love this school for helping me realize that God is my life."
Bob (Grade 7): "St. Agnes School means everything to me. The learning environment is outstanding! Everybody knows each other and the students and teachers share a special bond."
Jared (Grade 8): "At St. Agnes School, you receive not only an excellent education, but you have the opportunities to succeed academically and personally. I have learned many valuable lessons at St. Agnes School that I know I will take with me when I leave, from saying the right things at the right time to understanding the importance of being part of our community."
Adeline (Grade 2): "St. Agnes School makes me happy!"
Laura (Grade 4): "To me St. Agnes School is family."
Autumn (Grade 3): "I like St. Agnes School because it's a loving, caring school. It is a safe place to go to school. There are fun new ways to learn different things. We have great homemade lunches. Catholic Schools Week is always a blast!"
