Board Vote Approves Merger Of CAPA Schools

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Pittsburgh Public School Board has voted to consolidate two local schools.

On Wednesday evening, Board members voted six to three to merge CAPA High School and CAPA Rogers Middle School.

Rogers Middle School will move out of its current building in Garfield and move into the existing CAPA High School in downtown Pittsburgh.

However, some parents oppose the merger.

They say the have concerns about mixing middle school and high school students and worry there won't be enough space for both schools in one building. But officials with the School District say that the Board has purchased additional floors of the downtown building.

"I understand that Mr. Roosevelt has a mandate to be fiscally responsible. But I think that we neglect to look at the many resources that are available to us in the city of Pittsburgh," said concerned parent, Lisa Brown. "We have universities, we have people who are philanthropists and we have foundations that can come forward if we only tapped those resources."

The CAPA consolidation will take affect in the fall of 2009.
