Safe Driving Tips For Snowy Conditions

Video:  KDKA's Alison Morris reports

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Snow supplies are flying off the shelves at local stores as residents continue preparing for the upcoming snow storm.

KDKA's Alison Morris went to the experts today to get some advice on safe driving and preparing your car for the snowy weather.

"You want to have good tire traction," says Bevi Powell, of AAA. "Narrow tires are a little better in the snow because it cuts through the snow; you want to make sure you have enough windshield wiper solvent so you can keep a clear windshield."

She says it is always important to carry something in your trunk for traction such as kitty litter or a bag of sand.

"It also helps to have some weight in your trunk for traction," she adds.

Powell says on slick roads it's important to react easy on the brake and gas, and not make abrupt movements.

Some extra advice she offered is to stay on the main roads where the salt trucks clear the snow first and keep the gas tank half full to prevent condensation from forming that could freeze the gas line.
