Teen Drivers Learn Life-Saving Skills

On-Line registrations are over for the event. However, walk-ups are welcome at Consol Energy Park in Washington.

WASHINGTON (KDKA) ― Dozens of local teenagers are set to learn some potentially life-saving skills at a special kind of camp.

The Driving Skills For Life event is being held over the next three days at Consol Energy Park in Washington.

It aims to teach young drivers how to be safer on the road using hands-on exercises.

In one exercise, young drivers take a special Ford Mustang for a spin around a course.

The car is called a "skid car".

It allows drivers to learn how to properly react if a car spins out of control.

Teens will work on improving four specific skills: hazard recognition, vehicle handling, space management and speed management.

Vehicle crashes are the number one killer of teens in the United States.

There were 214 teen driving deaths in Pennsylvania in 2005.

KDKA is a proud sponsor of this teen driving event.
