Safety Officials Tout Cell Phone Ban for Teen Drivers

WASHINGTON (AP) ― Federal safety regulators want to ban cell phone use by teenage drivers.

The National Transportation Safety Board has voted to add to its annual list of "Most Wanted Safety Recommendations to States," a ban on novice drivers using any wireless communication devices.

The NTSB says new drivers already have enough things to worry about.

The safety board's acting chairman, Mark Rosenker, says "learning how to drive while distracted is definitely a recipe for
disaster."

The NTSB only has the power to make recommendations, but its staff and board members personally lobby, often with success, for changes the board considers the most important.

Already, eleven states and the District of Columbia restrict cell phone use among novice drivers. And the board says some ban the use of hand-held cell phones my motorists completely.
