Rendell To Sign Statewide Smoking Ban Bill

HARRISBURG (KDKA) ― Governor Ed Rendell says he plans to sign a bill that would make Pennsylvania the 33rd state to ban smoking in many work places and public spaces.

On Tuesday, the state Senate passed the bill and last week it was approved by the House.

The bill is a compromise and took more than one year for both sides to reach.

The bill would ban cigarette, cigar and pipe smoking in restaurants, office buildings, schools, sports arenas, theaters as well as bus and train stations.

Supporters say it would protect people from second-hand smoke. But opponents say it will hurt bars and restaurants.

The ban is set to take effect 90 days after Gov. Rendell signs it.
