Allegheny Co.'s New Taxes Bring In $21M So Far

PITTSBURGH (AP) ― Allegheny County's drink and car rental taxes have collected more than $21 million through July, which puts them ahead of pace to meet funding obligations for mass transit.

County Treasurer John Weinstein says nearly $19 million is from the 10 percent drink tax. He projects both taxes will bring in $40 million to $45 million by the end of the year.

The county approved the drink tax and $2-a-day tax on car rentals in December to fund the county's $30 million subsidy of The Port Authority of Allegheny County.

A spokesman for the county chief executive says taxes collected above the $30 million can be used for transit systems and county roads and bridges.
