Allegheny County Tests Voting Machines
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
Just two weeks before the general election several states including Ohio, Florida and West Virginia have reported problems with electronic voting machines.
But officials say voters in Allegheny County should vote in confidence when they head to the polls even as they use those electronic machines.
"I think people in this county should feel very good that if you show you're going to be able to vote and your vote will be counted accurately and that's the important thing--the integrity of the race," said Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato.
Electronic voting machines have been controversial ever since they were introduced.
But a random check of 18 of the county's 4,700 machines found that they are all running an unaltered version of the firmware and that means they can be trusted to count votes accurately.
"Allegheny County is the only county in Pennsylvania and the only county in the United States that is actually testing the software," said Onorato.
Denver based sys-test labs conducted the audit over the last week.
Election officials say that they are confident the machines will work properly but it will also take the help of voters to make sure November 4 goes as smoothly as possible.
"Please don't wait till Election Day to find out if you're registered to vote or where your polling place is at," said Mark Wolosikm the Allegheny County Elections Division Manager. "I can tell you it's going to be a busy day."
