McCain, Obama Cautious On North Korea

WASHINGTON (AP) ― Democrat presidential hopeful Barack Obama wants Congress to look closely at whether North Korea's nuclear declaration is accurate and the verification procedures are adequate.

Republican rival John McCain is also reacting cautiously to Thursday's North Korean announcement. President Bush says he will lift key trade sanctions and remove North Korea from the U.S. terrorism blacklist.

Obama calls the North Korean moves a step forward, but says critical questions remain unanswered. He says the U.S. should move quickly to re-impose sanctions if the North Koreans do not meet their obligations.

As his rival McCain put it, "My overall impression is that we should be very cautions."
