Clinton Rebuffs Reporter Over Race Card Question

 Campaign '08 Complete Coverage

 About The Candidates & Issues

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (CBS) ― While campaigning for his wife in Pittsburgh this morning, Former President Bill Clinton got tough with a reporter who asked about Clinton's alleged comments to a Philadelphia radio station yesterday.

As the former president signed autographs and talked with the crowd outside the Jewish Community Center this morning, a reporter who travels with the campaign caravan asked a question that Clinton clearly did not appreciate.

During the exchange, the reporter asked about an alleged comment that the Obama campaign was "playing the race card."

Reporter:  "Sir what did you mean when you said yesterday that the Obama campaign was playing the race card on you?"

Former President Bill Clinton: "When did I say that and to whom did I say it?"

Reporter: "On WHYY Radio yesterday."

Clinton: "No, no, no. That's not what I said. You always follow me around and play these little games – and I'm not going to play your games today. This is a day about Election Day. Go back and see what the question was and what my answer was. You have mischaracterized it to get another cheap story to divert the American people from the real urgent issues before us and I choose not to play your game today. Have a nice day."

The reporter was referring to comments Clinton made after the South Carolina Primary – comparing Obama's victory there to Jesse Jackson's past Primary wins.

During a radio interview yesterday, Clinton said the Obama campaign twisted his comments.

Clinton went on to say that he called Jesse Jackson and asked him if he was offended by his remarks. He added that Jackson told him he wasn't.
