Parishioners Saddened By Church Demolition

ELIZABETH TWP. (KDKA) ― Demolition is well underway at St. Michael Church in Elizabeth Township.

Earlier this summer, parishioners were informed that it would have to be torn down.

The church was built in 1851. It shut its doors in 1987 when the parish built a new church a few miles away. Church officials say it is beyond repair. The plaster is crumbling and it is too dangerous.

The demolition is heartbreaking for parishioners to watch. When it closed more than two decades ago, a group sued the diocese in an effort to keep it open, but they were unsuccessful.

Soon after it was awarded a plaque by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation but that is not legally binding.

Some parishioners say they would have liked to see it stay open, even as a chapel of convenience or possibly a museum and education center. But church officials say the building cannot be saved.
