Poll: Governor's Race Wide Open In Pennsylvania

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― It's eight months until voters hit the polls to nominate their party's candidate for governor of Pennsylvania, but already it's looking like a political donny-brook with the public very much up in the air on who should replace Governor Rendell.

"I'd still go with Lynn Swann if he ever decides to run again, but other than that I have no real favorites at this point," says Tyler Rickel of Shadyside.

Well, Swann's not running, but two other Republicans are Attorney General Tom Corbett and Congressman Jim Gerlach.

If the primary were today, the Quinnipiac poll says Republicans right now support Corbett over Gerlach, 42 percent to 13 percent, but a whopping 43 percent are undecided.

Gerlach said today he had plenty of time to overtake Corbett.

The picture is even murkier on the Democratic side.

If the primary were today, Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato would get 14 percent, Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel -- 12 percent, Auditor General Jack Wagner -- 11 percent, Scranton mayor Chris Doherty -- 8 percent, and Philadelphia businessman Tom Knox -- 5 percent.

But again, some 46 percent of Democrats don't know who they'll support.

With no clear winners and most voters not knowing who's running, Henry Thrower of the North Side had an idea.

"If nobody comes up, I'll run myself. I'm Henry Thrower and I approve this message," he said.

Truth is there's plenty of time for any new faces to enter the race.

Of course, it does take money to run and Dan Onorato with $5 million in the bank is the leader on that count.

Quinnipiac did do a match-up between Corbett and Onorato and Wagner.

Corbett beat them both but more than enough voters were undecided to easily change that result.
