Leaders Pay Respects To Lt. Gov. Knoll

HARRISBURG (AP) ― A memorial ceremony for the late Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll was held at the state Capitol.

Hundreds of mourners began paying their respects Friday before Knoll's flag-draped casket, which will remain in the Rotunda through Saturday afternoon.

State officials believe Knoll is only the second person to receive this honor in the current Capitol building.

Knoll was remembered in tributes by Gov. Ed Rendell, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, incoming Lt. Gov. Joe Scarnati, and Rep. John Murtha.

Clinton recalled Knoll as a pioneer in Pennsylvania politics as the state's first female lieutenant governor. Rendell said Knoll was caring and compassionate.

The 78-year-old Knoll died Nov. 12 after a four-month battle with neuroendocrine cancer.
