Murtha Holds Rally In Latrobe, Fights For Seat

LATROBE (KDKA) ― He's considered one of the most powerful men in Congress, but three days from Election Day, 12th District Democrat Rep. John Murtha is pulling out all the stops to hold on to his seat.

Backed by Sen. Bob Casey Jr. and Pennsylvania Auditor General Jack Wagner and facing the closest battle for his seat, Rep. Murtha, the 17 term Congressional fixture from Johnstown, rallied supporters in Latrobe.

"We're the ones who represent you. They criticize me for bringing projects home. I say to them, 'That's my job,'" said Murtha. "I represent the people of Western Pennsylvania."

Murtha is neck and neck with Republican challenger William Russell, one recent poll putĀ four points between the two men.

Russell recently launched a series of anti-Murtha ads over that last few weeks.

"Clearly, Mr. Murtha has lost touch with the people of his district," said Russell.

Murtha avoided reporters in Latrobe today, but he did speak to KDKA's Paul Martino earlier this week about the allegations in his challenger's ads.

Murtha made clear that he realizes he's in a political scrap of his life, but he also says not to count him out.

"They've been after me for a long time, but I didn't think it'd stick. From an outsider, a carpetbagger, but we're working now," said Murtha. "We're not taking any chances."

Meanwhile, former President Bill Clinton is set to be the key speaker at a Murtha rally on Monday in Johnstown.
