Confirmation Hearing Held For Dan Rooney

WASHINGTON (KDKA) ― Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney faced members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on his path to officially becoming ambassador to Ireland.

He received a warm welcome from lawmakers on Capitol Hill as his confirmation hearing got underway.

Rooney said he is ready to serve.

"I've been going to Ireland for over 40 years and I've been everywhere – I've gone to the north, I've been to the south, I've talked to people and I continue to try to talk to them," he said. "I would view my position as ambassador to continue that."

Rooney pledged to help American companies do business in Ireland.

"And I think it would be a fine place to be and I would spend my time to these companies – whether I'm talking to them here or there in explaining the opportunities that do exist there," he said.

After the hearing, Rooney told KDKA's Jon Delano that he believes it went well and is ready to move on to his next experience.

"Really honored to have the opportunity to be here and to be appointed with President Obama – it was just a great honor that in itself and we'll see how it goes," he said.

Patricia Rooney, Dan Rooney's wife, says she's not looking at the appointment as leaving Pittsburgh.

"I think it's a wonderful opportunity for us but we will be Pittsburghers forever," she said.

A vote has not yet been scheduled.
