Pennsylvanians Remember, Honor Lt. Gov. Knoll

(KDKA) One day after the loss of Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll, Pennsylvanians are mourning her death.

On Wednesday evening, Knoll passed away at the age of 78 following a tough battle with cancer and a viral infection.

Knoll was the first woman to be elected Lieutenant Governor in Pennsylvania. She also served as State Treasurer for two terms.

She was born a Pittsburgher, the daughter of a McKees Rocks mayor and went to St. Mary's Catholic School, then to Duquesne University.

Local government officials past and present are remembering Knoll.

"There was no indication at all that there was anything wrong," said former Pittsburgh mayor Sophie Masloff. "Her spirits were great and she was looking forward to her last two years, so it was a shock. I miss her as a friend."

"She just really believed that women and minorities used to have to break that glass ceiling and I think Catherine will be known for that," said District Magistrate Gene Riccardi.

Also, Gov. Ed Rendell calls her "one of the strongest, most dedicated public servants in Pennsylvania's history."

"She saw wrongs and she wanted to right them, she saw injustice and she wanted to make it just and she saw people suffering and she wanted to alleviate that suffering," said Gov. Rendell. "She was a great human being first and foremost and a wonderful lieutenant governor. She'll be deeply missed by the citizens of Pennsylvania."

Succeeding Knoll is the Senate President Pro Tempore Joseph Scarnati. He is a Republican from Jefferson County.
