Pittsburgh Zoo Welcomes Baby Elephant

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) ― The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium welcomed another new addition into the world.

An African elephant gave birth to a female calf yesterday afternoon.

The zoo says both mom and baby are doing fine.

It was the first elephant born at the zoo since Savannah delivered Callee in 2000.

Moja, another elephant at the zoo, is expecting any day.

Both elephants mated with the zoo's bull elephant, Jackson.

Staff will observe how well Savannah and other elephants in the herd bond with the newborn before displaying her.

That could happen as soon as this weekend.
