Zoo Prepares to Welcome Sea Lion Pup

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Officials at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium are getting ready to welcome a new addition and celebrate a first at the same time.

Ultrasound tests have confirmed that one of the zoo's sea lions, "Zoey," is expecting!

Zoey, who has been at the zoo since the late 1990s, is due to give birth some time this summer.

Like expectant parents, zoo officials are already busy getting ready for the new baby.

"We have started looking over the sea lion area to ensure that it is safe for the baby," Sea Lion Keeper Judy Obeldobel said in a release.

The pup would be the first sea lion ever to be born at the Pittsburgh Zoo.

Keepers think Zoey will make a good mom, too.

"Zoey was raised by her mother and was around pups as she was growing up, so we think she will be a good mom," Obeldobel added.

As for the proud pop, zoo officials believe the pup's father is "Seahawk," an orphaned sea lion who has lived at the Pittsburgh Zoo since he was rescued off from the Pacific coast.
