Zoo's Elephant Moves Into New Home

SOMERSET (KDKA) ― After fathering four healthy calves at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium – including two new additions this summer, the zoo's bull elephant, is now getting used to a new home today.

After a two-hour ride on an 18-wheel truck with a reinforced ceiling and sides, the 11,000-pound Jackson became the zoo's first elephant to take up residence at the International Conservation Center in Somerset County.

While such moves can be stressful on animals, Elephant Manager Willie Theison said Jackson is in a better position than most.

"The move itself will not be as stressful for Jackson as it might have been, because he was in a circus and actually likes to go for rides," Theison said in a statement from the zoo.

Being the first elephant at the ICC, Jackson will now have the opportunity to explore the area before the other elephants arrive.
