Pittsburgh Marathon Could Make A Comeback
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
After a three year absence, it looks like the Pittsburgh Marathon will be back again.
KDKA's Andy Sheehan reports the marathon was a victim of the city budget crisis and waning corporate support.
Now, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato have begun working with grassroots supporters to bring it back.
The city is courting major sponsors and Ravenstahl says those initial discussions are promising.
Unfortunately, a 2007 running is out of the question.
However, Ravenstahl is confident the marathon will return in May 2008.
"It's an event that really showcases Pittsburgh," said Ravenstahl. "It's something we should have as a big city."
A quality marathon will cost more than a $500,000 to put on but running groups, which have been leading the charge to revive the marathon, say they're willing to pitch in by volunteering to help organize the event and to round up smaller sponsors.
Ravenstahl says the marathon would be shot in the arm and a sign that Pittsburgh has rebounded from its financial difficulties.
