Pittsburgh Marathon Underway

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― More than 10,000 runners are taking to the streets of Pittsburgh this morning as part of the Dick's Sporting Goods City of Pittsburgh Marathon.

Runners started the race at 7:30 a.m. in the Strip District.

The race will finish at the Convention Center 26 miles later.

"I put a lot of time into training and hopefully it pays off," said John Woodring, of Bethel Park.

Woodring and his sister, Lauren, are making the marathon a family affair when they run it together.

"Our dad was a runner, so he's excited to see us be able to run it," said Lauren Woodring.

In their final preparations, many of the marathoners were "carbing up" at an all-you-can-eat pasta dinner at the Spaghetti Warehouse in the Strip District on Saturday.

"Well, the idea of the pasta is to get as much carbs in as you can so that it gives you enough energy for the next day," said Bob Lowry, of Washington D.C. "Also, to be with other runners and get the enthusiasm around it too."

During the race, the participants will find support from neighborhood street-side parties, live bands and local high school cheerleading squads.

Also, in the final mile, runners will find words of encouragement scribbled out in chalk.
