Tour Of Pennsylvania Pedals Into Town This Weekend
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
This weekend, more than 100 bicyclists participating in the Tour of Pennsylvania will pedal from Somerset and Westmoreland counties and into the heart of Downtown Pittsburgh.
The Tour of Pennsylvania is a first-of-its-kind, 420 mile race that has been going on all week. The competition kicked off Tuesday in Philadelphia and continues into Pittsburgh as part of the city's 250th Anniversary celebrations.
The race features some of the world's elite young riders who are the future generation of the sport and the next stars of the Olympics and Tour de France.
The Tour of Pennsylvania is also the world's richest race for riders under the age of 25 with a total purse of $150,000.
Cyclists will be traveling in a caravan, with marked police cars as escorts. Police said cyclists can hit speeds of 30 mph or higher. Roads will be periodically blocked off as the racers pass.
