Pittsburgh Business Times Releases Book Of Lists

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― For more than 20 years, the Pittsburgh Business Times' Book of Lists has become the Bible on who ranks where in Pittsburgh's corporate world.

It also encompasses the most challenging golf courses for those "business" golf outings.

"I think everybody finds the golf lists entertaining -- there's the most challenging golf courses -- and also the golf handicap -- the lowest executive golf handicap," Pittsburgh Business Times Research Director Ethan Lott said.

Lott does all the research and the most challenging course is at Nemacolin Woodlands with Rege Champ, CEO of the Allegheny Valley School, getting top billing as the executive with the lowest golf handicap.

Other lists are more serious, like the region's largest employers. UPMC, the federal government, the state government, Giant Eagle and West Penn Allegheny Health System are the top 5.

In 1987, Westinghouse Electric was the top employer, along with USX and Mellon Bank.

As for local executive compensation in public corporations, the winner is James Rohr of PNC Bank.

"James Rohr, based upon last year's proxy statements, had a 2006 compensation of around $18 million," Lott said.

And for the best places to work, some smaller companies head the list like NET Xperts, Pittsburgh Marriott North, NAI Pittsburgh Commercial, Motionplan Inc. and DiNuzzo Investment Advisors.

But as Editor Lauren Lawley Head points out, this list requires the employer to agree to be rated.

"We invite companies to participate in that process and their employees fill out surveys to rank their satisfaction," she explained.

Lots of big employers either don't want to be rated or don't make the list. It turns out that 45 of the top 50 best places to work are companies with fewer than 100 employees.

The Book of Lists is mailed free to all Business Times subscribers and is also available for purchase.
