PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― It's been a busy year already and Pittsburgh is continuing its big 250th celebration this summer.

"Already we've celebrated Mr. Roger's 80th birthday. We've set a world record for the number of vow renewals, in which I was honored to participate," said Mayor Luke Ravenstahl. "We've naturalized 250 citizens. We've opened a major new art exhibit and cut the ribbon on 'Dinosaurs In Their Time.'

Mayor Luke Ravensthal and other organizers cut the city's birthday cake today and discussed what events the city is planning as the year continues.

Later this month, the rededication of the Boulevard of the Allies will honor the military as well as veterans. That's scheduled for June 29 and will include the permanent installation of American flags along the roadway and a 21-Gun Salute.

Also, fireworks and community festivals are also in the works this summer for downtown Pittsburgh and on the South Side.

From June 24 to 29, bicyclists will be taking to the trail in the Tour of Pennsylvania. The event starts in Philadelphia and ends right here in Pittsburgh.

Then, Pittsburghers can celebrate the Fourth of July with the Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta: Roar on the Shore. This year, the regatta will be held on July 3 & 4 on the North Shore and features power boat racing along with the annual Zambelli fireworks show.

There's also some fun this weekend with the three-day long "Parade Of Champions" celebration at the Heinz History Center and Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum. This event honors the best Pittsburgh athletes of all time.

The fan festival will feature interactive sports activities and will have autograph sessions with from former champion athletes such as Steve Blass, a former Pirates pitcher.

"Over 50 former athletes from Pittsburgh are going to be involved in the 'Parade of Champions,'" said Blass.
