Dr. Mike's Pet Tip: Dealing With A Bored Dog
For dogs, boredom can result in destructive or neurotic behaviors. Without the stimulation provided by regular play and exercise, dogs often turn to digging, barking, chewing or other forms of misbehavior to relieve stress and excess energy, and to alleviate their boredom.
If you go out to run an errand and leave your dog out alone in the yard, he may dig just for something to do. Or if you leave your dog in your home all day while you're at work, your neighbors may report that your dog barks frequently. Both could be signs that your dog is bored, and/or has a bit of separation anxiety.
So what should you do? When your dog is left alone, provide him with special chew toys with treats or morsels of food stuffed inside. These unique toys give your dog a way to amuse himself. Your dog will eventually find a way to get the food or snack pieces out of the toybut it will take him a whileand he'll be totally entertained during the process.
You can also use these toys when you're at home with your dog. If you notice that your dog chews on something that is off-limits, say "no" or "eh" in a low voice, and immediately give him the safe chew toy with the treats packed inside. Praise him for good behavior. Remember to give your dog safe chew toys instead of household items like old shoes, because that could encourage him to also chew on new shoes. (Your dog doesn't know the difference between new and old shoes.)
