Dr. Mike's Pet Tip: Caring For Your Dog's Teeth

You may not realize it, but puppies and dogs need regular dental care. And a thorough dental checkup by your veterinarian should be included with your puppy's or dog's regularly scheduled exam.

Dry, crunchy dog foods can be helpful in keeping teeth clean. As the dog chews, particles from the dry food scrape against the teeth, acting like a toothbrush to help remove plaque. Dry dog food and appropriate treats exercise the teeth and gums to help promote good dental health.

You can also provide your puppy or dog with a recommended dental chew product or toy that will act as a scraper and help prevent tartar buildup.

Between professional teeth cleanings, you should clean your dog's teeth. Experts suggest brushing at least every other day. For the first few sessions of teeth cleaning at home, try gently massaging your dog's teeth with a fingertip until he is used to having you handle this mouth. Then begin swabbing the outer surface of the teeth with a square of gauze. After your pet becomes accustomed to this routine, you may want to switch to a pet dental brush or a soft child-size toothbrush. Do not use toothpastes for humans. There are special toothpastes and dental cleaning products which are pet-specific. Ask your veterinarian or check at your local pet store.
