Zoo's Baby Beavers Have 1st Check-Up

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― One of the beavers at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium is the proud mother of six new babies.

Today was the very first check up for the new Canadian Beavers with veterinarians.

Experts call them 'Kits' and say a litter of six babies is considered a very large.

"Females will have two to eight. I think the record was nine," said the zoo's Henry Kacprzyk.

Kacprzyk says the zoo's doctors weighed them, listened to their hearts and took their temperatures to make sure the kits are maturing as they should.

"This is our first time holding the babies," said Cindy Stadler, one of the zoo's veternarians. "They all look nice and pudgy and good growth for 9-days-old."
