Man Attacked By Pit Bulls In Larimer Speaks

LARIMER (KDKA) ― One of the men attacked by pit bulls in Larimer has returned to the hospital.

Alesia Castaphney, the wife of the victim, says his wounds are now considered to be life-threatening.

The attack happened Monday night.

Ronald King says he was walking home from a Labor Day picnic when he was attacked by four pit bulls.

"I heard these dogs barking so I went the other way around back up Larimer to hit Joseph Street," he said. "So when I turned around, four pit bulls were coming after me."

The dogs ran from the front porch of a house on 12 Orphan Street. Police say two of the dogs were chained.

"So I jumped up on this little wall. The mother and the son came out and was trying to get the dogs off of me, but they were just biting my legs and was jumping up on the wall taking me apart," King explained.

He says his friend and neighbor Albert Castaphney ran to help him.

"After that, the dogs turned off of me and turned to Albert and knocked him to the ground and was just chewing him up and there was little I could do so I got away and called the police," he said.

King and Castapheny were treated at West Penn Hospital and released, but Castaphney had to back for more treatment.

"On his arm, there are two bites on top and two bites underneath. And where the holes are is really, really, swollen," Alesia Castaphney said.

Police and animal control went to the home Tuesday but no one answered the door.

"Basically, we would have quarantined the dogs," Gerald Akrie, supervisor of Animal Control, said. "If they the rabies shots and licenses, they would automatically be cited."

The dogs could be quarantined for 10 days. If after 10 days a judge declares the animals aren't dangerous, they would be returned to the owner.
