Dog Survives Shooting In Clairton

CLAIRTON (KDKA) ― Cash is an old pup - more than 60 in "dog years" and as sweet tempered and smart as can be.

Makes you wonder why anybody would use him for target practice.

"Luckily someone wasn't a very good shot because he could have lost an eye," Human Officer Kathy Hecker said.

Cash was found by a Good Samaritan in a wooded area of Clairton off East Drive just over two weeks ago – bloodied and hungry but with his tail still wagging.

"It's doubtful to me, with the personality that it had, that it could have been doing anything threatening," says Dr. Kenton Rexford, an emergency veterinarian at Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center.

X-rays showed Cash had been hit twice - one bullet through his cheekbone - the other shattering his jawbone. It took a lot of surgery to repair.

"It's nasal passages were now connected were now communicating with it's mouth because of the direction the bullet traveled," Rexford said.

"My aunt, she says, 'He's been shot in the face? Who would shoot a dog in the face?'"

Steve Edwards is the nephew of the dog's owner.

For nine years, Cash has belonged to Cynthia Turner and her family on Horton Street.

He slipped his collar when the kids were giving him a bath in the backyard. But usually he came home if he got loose.

But there have been other shootings in this neighborhood.

"So we don't know if the attack on the dog was personal," says Hecker.

In her investigation she is trying to figure out if the attack on Cash may be the result of a feud or a random act of violence.

There is a $500 reward for information leading to an arrest.

And once Cash is feeling better - his family is going to throw a party for him.
