Dog Recovering After Suffering Snake Bite

(KDKA) Veterinarians are calling one very lucky dog a fighter.

Cassius and his owner were on a local visit from Colorado when he was bitten by a poisonous snake in northern West Virginia.

His doctors gave Cassius a 50-50 chance of survival, and now the dog is recovering.

Cassius' vets say the venom damaged skin and tissue around his neck and front legs. He has undergone several surgeries to remove the dead skin.

"The amazing thing about Cassius, his tail never stopped wagging," said veterinarian Dr. John Payne. "He's a whole lot better now than he was two weeks ago. He's certainly a fighter."

However, the medical bills are mounting for Cassius' owner at nearly $20,000.

The Pittsburgh Veterinary Center on Camp Horne Toad is planning a golf outing and raffle this Sunday to help raise money for his care.

Dr. Payne says poisonous snake bites like this one are rare in our area.

Anyone interested in helping can make a donation earmarked for Cassius to: The Animal Care and Assistance Fund at Animalcarefund.org (or call 412-348-2588)
