Hunters Take Aim At Canada Geese In Local Park

NORTH HUNTINGDON (KDKA) ― Goose hunting is underway this month in several Westmoreland County Parks.

Park officials say it's the best way they've found to control the native goose population.

Today was the first day of hunting at Indian Lake Park in North Huntingdon.

Officials say the number of Canada geese there is simply overwhelming. They say there are upwards of 300 geese in a less than five acre body of water.

The number of geese always increases the amount of waste they produce. A full-grown Canada goose can produce more than a pound of waste per day.

This causes problems on the trails and in the water.

Six hunters participated in today's hunt. The park was closed to others during the morning hours that the hunt took place.

One man from Jeannette protested outside the park's gates. He says there are other ways to get rid of the geese like building a fence around the water.

Goose hunting will continue each Wednesday and Friday morning at Indian Lake Park.

Hunts are also being conducted at some Westmoreland County run parks throughout the month of September.
