Washington Co. Dog Sniffs Out Bed Bugs

AVELLA (KDKA) ― A dog in Washington County can sniff out bed bugs.

The bugs are small as a pin and hard to see with the naked eye, but Jack, a two-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, lets his nose do the work.

He was trained at a school in Florida.

Gretta MacIntyre, from Avella, has a business called Sleep Tight where for a minimum of $250 a visit, Jack will sniff around for the unwelcome visitors.

"We do a lot of universities and colleges, hotels mainly, apartment buildings," she said.

MacIntyre showed off Jack's skills by hiding three viles of live bed bugs around the house.

Jack found them with no problem.

"He actually puts his foot on it and looks at me and then if I don't give any approval then he starts to scratch it," MacIntyre explained.

She says the Pittsburgh area hasn't seen the same kind of bed bug problem as other parts of the country and does get calls from out of town periodically.

Both the New York Times and the Discovery Channel have done stories on other dogs trained like Jack.
