St. Vincent Students Anticipate Papal Mass In NYC

LATROBE (KDKA) ― Pope Benedict XVI has arrived in Washington, D.C. to begin his first visit to the US, and among those there for a special arrival ceremony at the White House was the president of St. Vincent College.

In the coming days, a group of St. Vincent students will be leaving to see the Pope during his visit.

Students and educators at St. Vincent College in Latrobe say Pope Benedict XVI and the founder of the Benedictine College share a common heritage.

"St. Benedict is a founder of the religious order at the school that we go to," Campus Minister Katie Wojtunik said.

The Pope's first visit to the United States is extra special to students and administrators at St. Vincent, who will be at Yankee Stadium this Sunday for a mass with the Pope.

"Benedict is very down to earth and he's very real," Lindsay Schechter said. "And that is kind of what we need right now. I mean he has big shoes to fill, but he's very real and very practical and he gives us so much hope for the future because he's very down to earth and he can relate with all of us and he can be a good shepherd for us."

Young people here say Pope Benedict XVI's message of love, unity and hope has touched them deeply and they hope to learn even more from him during his visit.

"I really think that I would like to learn more about him. At this point I know the basic views, the basic what everyone knows about him." Melissa Evans said. "I think this will help me learn a lot more about him."
