A group of young Catholics from the Pittsburgh area were among the more than 45,000 faithful who attended Pope Benedict XVI's historic mass at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.
It was the first public mass during his six-day trip to the United States. In his homily, the pontiff called America the land of opportunity, but said the opportunity in the past wasn't always equal.
"The church in the United States is now called to look to the future, firmly grounded in the faith passed on by previous generations and they are ready to meet new challenges," Pope Benedict XVI said.
About 250 people from Pittsburgh traveled to the nation's capital for the mass. They wore black and gold windbreakers and sat together.
One young woman told KDKA's David Highfield that the experience was more powerful than she expected.
The Pope spoke to Catholic educators at Catholic University and held an interreligious prayer service.
