Youth Council Hopes Pope's Visit Will Inspire

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The young people who make up the Pittsburgh Diocese's Youth Council say they think Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the United State may really inspire other people their age.

"All of us go through those phases where you don't want to go to church, you don't want to live the faith, but you know down inside that that's the way it should be going," said Mike Kaufman, a student from Upper Saint Clair.

"He really needs to just convey that our faith is a very, very important part of our lives and that the youth need to make an effort to find it faster," added Seton LaSalle student, Sean Alan.

Saint Joseph High School student, Michael Barkowski, says he saw Pope Benedict XVI at World Youth Day in Germany.

"That experience was a pivotal point in my life, was pivotal point in my religious, my spiritual life," he said. "That same excitement, that same emotion, those same feelings I know are going be there in this trip to Washington.

Younger Catholics made up a large part of the crowd on Pope John Paul II visits to America, and this local group of young people says they hope Pope Benedict's message will resonate with their generation.

"Pope Benedict XVI is a fascinating and exciting man and it is going be the greatest opportunity ever to get to see him," said Ringgold student, Maura Rodgers.

Stay with KDKA for much more on Pope Benedict XVI's visit to America.
