Blair, Young Taken In 2nd Round Of NBA Draft
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) ―
Former Pitt Panthers basketball stars, DeJuan Blair and Sam Young, are now members of the NBA following the draft Thursday night.
Blair had been slotted to go as high as the 13th pick on several draft boards; but instead, he was selected with the 37th overall pick. That's the 7th pick of the second round.
The difference in a potential contract is in the millions, and he will not receive the guaranteed two year contract that comes with being a first round pick.
Blair averaged 15.7 points and 12.3 rebounds for Pitt and was the Big East co-player of the year.
He watched the draft with friends and family at the Omni William Penn Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh.
Meanwhile, Blair's former teammate Sam Young, who also had a shot to go in the first round, actually went one pick before Blair in the second round.
Young was picked 36th overall by the Memphis Grizzlies. They also took Hasheem Thabeet from UConn with the number two pick in the draft.
Young was All-Big East and set Pitt's single-season record with 690 points. He finished fourth in the Big East in scoring with 19.2 points per game.
The Grizzlies have averaged just 23 wins the last three seasons.
