Report: North Pole Could Be Ice-Free This Summer

NEW YORK (CBS) ― A shocking new report claims that ice on the North Pole could disappear entirely this year.

The report appears in Britain's Independent newspaper.

The report says the chances of an ice-free North Pole are greater than 50:50. The reason is because the deep, thick ice which typically characterizes the North Pole has gradually been replaced by vast stretches of thinner ice which forms over a single year. The thinner ice is more subject to melting during the summer.

According to the report, satellite data gathered recently shows the rate of sea ice melting at an all-time high, even greater than last year's record-setting summer.

If true, it would mean the only way to reach the planet's true North Pole would be by boat this summer.
