National broadcaster NHK is reporting that Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda will announce his resignation.
Fukuda has called an emergency news conference for later Monday evening, but his office has not given the reason.
Fukuda took office less than a year ago after his predecessor, Shinzo Abe, resigned suddenly after just 12 months in the job.
