Turns out Vice President Cheney and Illinois Senator Barack Obama are closer than they seem.

Lynne Cheney, the vice president's wife, told MSNBC that her husband and Obama are eighth cousins.

She says she discovered the long-ago ties between the two while researching her ancestry for her latest book, "Blue Skies, No Fences," a memoir about growing up in Wyoming. Cheney's book doesn't mention the ancestral ties.

According to her spokeswoman, Obama is a descendent of Mareen Duvall. This French Huguenot's (HYOO'-guh-nots) son married the granddaughter of a Richard Cheney, who arrived in Maryland in the late 1650's from England.

A spokesman for Obama offered a tongue-in-cheek response.

"Every family has a black sheep."
